Clothing and gear recommendations:
Clothing:
- Top: T-shirt or light long-sleeve shirt (long sleeves protect from sun)
- Bottom: Comfortable pants, light trousers, or modest shorts (not too short)
- Fabric: Cotton or moisture-wicking materials, avoid jeans (heavy and hot)
- Layers: Light jacket for early morning if winter (November-February can be cool)
Footwear - Important:
- Best: Sneakers or trainers, light hiking shoes
- Okay: Closed sports sandals (like Tevas) if you must
- Don't wear: Flip-flops, open sandals, heels, fancy shoes
- Why closed shoes: Sand gets everywhere in open shoes, sandboarding needs foot protection, climbing dunes easier in proper shoes
Accessories:
- Sunglasses (essential—morning sun is low and bright)
- Sunscreen (sun reflects off sand even in morning)
- Hat or cap (optional but helpful)
- Scarf or shemagh (traditional, plus protects from sand during dune bashing)
What to Bring:
- Phone or camera
- Small backpack for your stuff
- Any medications you need
- Extra phone charger/power bank
What NOT to Bring:
- Valuables or expensive jewelry
- White or very light clothing (will get dusty/sandy)
- Anything you're not willing to get sand on
Cultural Consideration:
While desert tours are casual, remember you're still in the UAE. Modest clothing is respectful—avoid very revealing clothes. This is more important for women but applies to everyone.
Photography Outfits:
If you care about how you look in photos, earth tones (beige, tan, brown, olive) photograph beautifully in the desert. Bright colors also pop against the sand. Avoid wearing beige/sand colored clothes that blend in completely.
