The Culture of Tipping in Dubai
One of the most frequently asked questions by visitors is: "How much to tip desert safari driver in Dubai?" Tipping in the UAE is not mandatory like in the USA, but it is deeply ingrained in the service culture. Service staff, including drivers, often rely on tips to supplement their income.
General Rule of Thumb
A tip of 10% to 15% of the tour cost, or a flat amount of AED 50 - 100 ($15–$30) per family/group, is considered generous and appropriate for a standard safari driver.
Who Should You Tip? And How Much?
🚙 The Safari Driver
They pick you up, drive safely, perform the skilled dune bashing, and drop you home. They are the most important person on your trip.
Recommended: AED 20 – 50 per person (or AE 100 per car)
🐫 Camel Handlers
They assist you in mounting/dismounting the camel and often take photos for you.
Recommended: AED 10 – 20
💃 Waiters & Performers
Camp staff serving dinner or Shisha, and the talented artists (Fire dancers, Tanoura).
Recommended: AED 10 – 20 directly or in a tip box
🎨 Henna Artists
Often a small design is free, but larger intricate designs are paid. If free, a tip is nice.
Recommended: AED 10 – 20
Why Tipping Matters
Desert safari drivers have a demanding job. They maintain high vigilance during dune bashing to ensure your safety, manage time schedules, and act as your host for 6-7 hours. A tip is a direct "Thank You" for their skill and hospitality.
Tip: Always carry small denomination notes (AED 10s, 20s, 50s) so you can easily tip different people without needing change.
