Dubai is modern, but it is still a conservative culture. The desert safari manages a fine line between 'holiday fun' and 'cultural respect'. Here is the official dress code.
Read the RulesUnlike visiting a Mosque (where you must cover head-to-toe), the desert safari is a casual tourist zone. However, overly revealing clothing can cause awkwardness in the family-friendly camp environment.
You will see everything from bikinis (please don't) to ballgowns (impractical) in the desert. The 'Code' is largely unwritten, but it is based on two things: Safety and Modesty.
Safety wise: No loose fabric near machinery (Quad bikes). No heels on sand dunes. Modesty wise: It is respectful to cover shoulders and knees, especially when visiting the Bedouin camp where you will be interacting with local staff and families.
Shorts, T-shirts, Jeans, Dresses (knee length), Sandals, Sneakers.
Short mini-skirts (impractical for sitting), High heels (dangerous), Heavy synthetics.
Swimwear, offensive slogans on shirts, nudity.
Closed toe shoes are mandatory for driving Quads.
We want you to feel free on your holiday, but we also want to honor the traditions of the UAE. Our dress code advice is designed to ensure you get the warmest welcome possible from everyone you meet in the desert.

How to beat the code and the weather.
Wear your standard summer tourist outfit (Shorts/T-shirt). This keeps you cool in the 4x4.
Carry a lightweight shirt, kimono, or large scarf in your bag. This is your 'modesty filter'.
Throw on your cover-up. You are now respectful, warm (AC/Wind), and protected from mosquito bites.
Buying a Ghutra adds to the 'local' look and is 100% culturally appreciated, not appropriation.
Many people swap from sneakers (dune bashing) to flip flops (dinner). This is totally fine.
Different parts of the tour have different needs.
You are strapped into a 4x4 for 45 minutes of intense movement. Tight clothing will be very uncomfortable.
Restrictive jeans or tight waistbands are a bad idea. Go for elasticated waists or loose fits. The seatbelt can dig in during the dune bashing maneuvers.

The camp is where you meet the culture. It is polite to be slightly more covered up here.

Climbing onto a camel is.. ungainly. Short skirts serve you no favors here.

We’ve curated answers to the most common questions to ensure your journey is seamless from the moment you book.
